Nature reserve
Islands, reefs and rock formations under protection, about 40 kilometres west of Catarman. The area covers the island municipality of Biri and the rest of the Balicuatro Islands, plus the coast of Lavezares, Rosario and San Jose, whose first letters make the name Larosa. Its 33,492 hectares of land and sea hold beaches, coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests.
The San Bernardino Strait runs through it. The water is rough, with strong waves and currents, and surfers come for it. Local belief holds that the sea goddess Berbinota protects the whole area.
