Hofileña Ancestral House

A family home on Cinco de Noviembre Street, built by Manuel Severino Hofileña for his wife Gilda Ledesma Hojilla, a former Miss Silay, and for their nine children. Ramon Hofileña, one of the children, lived here until recently and took visitors around the house himself.

The house dates from 1934, in the Art Deco and Art Nouveau taste of that decade: a steep roof with wide eaves, and wide steps up to a portico. Inside are narra floors, a staircase of ironwood with balustrades carved one by one, and doors cut with callado tracery that lets air and light through. The second floor holds a gallery of more than 1,000 pieces: paintings by Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, Ang Kiukok and BenCab, a sketch by the young Jose Rizal, and a painting by Goya. It opened to the public in 1962, the first ancestral house in the city to do so.
