Local holiday
Negros Island's sugar planters rose up against Spanish rule on this day, starting in the town then called Minuluan, now Talisay. Negros Occidental marks Cinco de Noviembre every November 5 as a local holiday.
On November 3, 1898, landowner Aniceto Lacson led troops north from Bacolod, through Minuluan, while Juan Araneta led troops to the south. The two-day uprising ended Spanish control of the island with little bloodshed and led to the short-lived Republic of Negros.
