The oldest American-founded university in Asia, with an acacia-lined campus and an anthropology museum. The Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions opened it in 1901 as Silliman Institute, an elementary school for boys. It carries the name of Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a retired businessman from Cohoes, New York, who gave the first $10,000. It became a college in 1910 and a university in 1938.

More than 10,000 students from the Philippines and at least 56 other countries study here, and the National Historical Institute lists the university as a National Historical Landmark. The Anthropology Museum stands in Hibbard Hall and holds finds dug up across Negros and in parts of Mindanao.
