Legazpi Cathedral
A cathedral in the Old Albay District of Legazpi, dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines unveiled a historical marker here in 2018.
Franciscans founded the mission in 1587, when the site was a visita of Cagsaua, and built a first church of nipa and lumber. It became a parish in 1616 under the name Albay. Fire destroyed the wooden church in 1754, and Father Pedro Romero built the first stone church in 1834. The Philippine-American War left it charred in 1900, and the Second World War damaged parts of it in 1945. It became the seat of the Diocese of Legazpi when the diocese was created in 1951.
