Aguinaldo Shrine
The house where the Philippines declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. It stands in Kawit and works today as a museum and a national shrine. Every June 12, on the holiday called Araw ng Kalayaan, top government officials raise the Philippine flag here.
Emilio Aguinaldo was born here in 1869, and he designed the enlarged house himself, with secret passages and hiding places for papers and weapons. Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista read the declaration from a window of the grand hall on the second floor. Aguinaldo added the front Independence balcony between 1919 and 1921, and many visitors take that balcony for the spot where the declaration was read. The dining room ceiling carries a raised-relief map of the country. His 1924 Packard stands outside, and his marble tomb is in the garden behind the house.
