Pamitinan Cave

no rating yet ♥ 2

A limestone cave in the foothills of the Sierra Madre, near Wawa Dam in the municipality of Rodriguez. Andres Bonifacio and eight other katipuneros declared independence from the Spanish Empire inside it on April 12, 1895, and the walls still carry the words "Viva la Independencia Filipina".

The cave stands in the Pamitinan Protected Landscape, in Barangay San Rafael. Its older name was the Cave of Bernardo Carpio, after the figure in Philippine mythology whom the gods chained in the Montalban gorge, cursed to keep two mountains from colliding. Japanese soldiers camped in the cave during World War II. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared it a historic site on June 21, 1996.
