Tayum Church

A 19th century Baroque church in Barangay Poblacion, Tayum, declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2001 along with 25 other Spanish era churches. Secular priests, not friars, founded and built it to Christianize the Tinguians, and Tayum became an independent parish in 1803. The parish is under the patronage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose feast falls on 25 November, and belongs to the Diocese of Bangued.

The plain lower facade carries one semicircular arched portal, wave-like cornices and rounded pilasters. Above it are three windows and a soft curved pediment that ends in two large volutes and urn-like finials. A four-tiered bell tower stands to the right, rectangular at the base and octagonal higher up. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake of 27 July 2022 damaged the church, and no physical restoration has been made since.
