Bangued Cathedral
The seat of the Diocese of Bangued, facing the town plaza in Barangay Zone 6 Poblacion. Its full name is Saint James the Elder Cathedral Parish, for the saint it is dedicated to, and it is the centre of Catholic life in the province. Builders started the church in 1722 and finished it in 1807, about 73 metres long, with a large convento beside it that later became a school.
American planes dropped incendiary bombs on the church on 10 March 1945 and its records were lost. Only the walls, the convent and the bell tower survived. Work on the roof, a new altar and an electric pipe organ began in 1947. The church became a cathedral in 1955, when the Prelature of Bangued was set up, and the prelature became a diocese in 1982. Saint James the Elder is honoured on 25 July.
