Burnham Park

no rating yet ♥ 67

The city's central park: a boating lagoon, a bike loop and a skating rink, laid out by Daniel Burnham in the American period. Burnham was the American architect who drew the city plan for Baguio, and the park, officially the Burnham Park Reservation, is the open ground at the middle of downtown. It sits on the meadow of Kafagway, the Ibaloi settlement that downtown Baguio grew from, and Burnham put it in his 1905 plan for the city.

Burnham Lake is man-made, about a century old and 3.04 metres deep, with boats for rent and tilapia, carp and koi in the water. The Rose Garden at the north entrance holds an amphitheatre and Burnham's bust. Other corners are the Orchidarium, the Avong Ibaloi Heritage Garden, the Igorot Park where people play chess under a statue of the five main Igorot groups, and the Melvin Jones Grandstand and open field, where Pope John Paul II said Mass in February 1981.
