Kiangan Shrine

no rating yet ♥ 4

The place where the highest commander of the Japanese Imperial Army surrendered. General Tomoyuki Yamashita, also called the Tiger of Malaya, gave himself up to Filipino and American forces on 2 September 1945. The old home economics building of Kiangan Central School marks the spot.

The Philippine Tourism Authority built the memorial at Linda in Kiangan in 1974. It is concrete and steel, and its shape follows the native Ifugao house. The National Historical Commission has declared the site a National Landmark, and a 1975 proclamation made it a military shrine. The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office runs it.
