Boac Cathedral
A cathedral in the town centre, ringed by centuries-old defensive walls. It served as a refuge from pirate raids as much as a place of worship, and the National Museum declared it an Important Cultural Property in 2018.
Work started in 1756, with the church facing east and its rear over the lower town, and it was finished in 1792. Local tradition says Moro pirates attacked while the townspeople sheltered inside, and an apparition of Mary with outstretched hands drove the raiders off. That story gave the patroness her title, Mahal na Birhen ng Biglang Awa (Our Lady of Prompt Succor), and her image was crowned in 1958. The walled compound holds the bishop's residence and her diocesan shrine, which has mass every day and a healing mass on the 11th of each month. It is the seat of the Diocese of Boac.
