The province's main island, Basilan Island, ranks as the largest and northernmost of the major islands of the Sulu Archipelago. It lies just off the southern coast of the Zamboanga Peninsula.
Three main ethnic groups live on the island: the indigenous Yakan, and the Tausug and Chavacano who arrived later. The Yakan and Tausug are mostly Muslim, and the Chavacano are mostly Christian. Isabela, the former provincial capital, stands on the island but is run separately as part of the Zamboanga Peninsula region.
