About Special Geographic Area
The Special Geographic Area is not a province. It is a scatter of 63 barangays inside Cotabato whose residents voted in the 2019 plebiscite to join Bangsamoro, so the region governs them while the province around them stays in Soccsksargen. In 2024 those barangays were reorganised into eight municipalities of their own, which is tidier on paper than it is on the ground.
