Kanlaon
An active volcano and the highest mountain on Negros at 2,465 metres. It is also the highest peak in the Visayas, and it ranks as the 42nd-highest peak of an island in the world.
The cone is an andesitic stratovolcano and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It straddles the border between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, about 30 kilometres southeast of Bacolod. Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1819, usually steam blasts that drop a little ash around the mountain, and one in 1996 killed three climbers near the summit. Just below the summit on the north side is the active Lugud crater, and north of that the Margaja Valley, a crater 2 by 0.8 kilometres with a small seasonal lake. Hot springs run out along the slopes, among them Mambukal at the far northeast. PHIVOLCS watches the volcano and suspended all treks to the summit crater in 2001, when earthquake clusters returned.
