A community-run marine sanctuary about 45 minutes by boat, with turtles and a hard coral garden. The island is volcanic and covers 74 hectares, 7 kilometres off the southeastern tip of Negros and 30 kilometres south of Dumaguete. Apo means elder, or respected ancestor, in the Visayan languages.
The water around it is a protected marine reserve. Two resorts stand on the island, Apo Island Beach Resort and Liberty's Lodge, and each runs a dive centre. There is also a ranger station and a lighthouse. The island is one of the 23 barangays of the town of Dauin, with 918 residents at the 2010 census.
