The regional museum, covering prehistoric burial goods through the sugar boom, and the first government-sponsored museum in the country outside Metro Manila. It stands near the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, in a building from 1971 by the architect Sergio Penasales.
The permanent exhibit runs from stone-age pottery and trade ware from China and Thailand to weapons from the Filipino-Spanish war of the 1800s, Spanish-era sculpture, fossils and jewellery. Parts of a British ship that sank are on show, with remnants of the war. One section displays religious figures of many sizes, from relics to modern images of saints.
