Cuenca sits at the foot of Mount Maculot, the ridge that hikers climb for the long view over Taal Lake, and that climb is why most outsiders come. The Batangas municipality itself is middling by local standards, about 36,500 people, neither among the province's biggest towns nor its smallest.
