Cabra Island Lighthouse
A Spanish-era lighthouse on the north-westernmost island of the Lubang group, now closed to visitors because the structure has fallen apart. Ships entering the Philippines from the South China Sea picked up the Cabra light first, and it pointed them either towards Manila Bay or through the Verde Island Passage, one of the busiest sea routes in the country, into the centre of the archipelago.
Work began in 1885 and the light was first lit in 1889, the first finished under Spain's renewed lighthouse programme and the first of five first-order lights the Spanish built here. The square tower stands 20 metres high and the light carried 46 kilometres. The Coast Guard put up a solar-powered tower beside it, after which thieves stripped the Fresnel lenses and the bronze marker, and the roof of the keeper's house collapsed. The island is a single barangay under the municipality of Lubang.
