Kayangan Lake
Often called the cleanest lake in the country, reached by a short climb over a ridge from the boat. The water is brackish, part fresh and part salt, and clear enough to show the rock formations and the fish from the surface. Limestone karsts ring it, and a nearly pitch black cavern, Awuyuk Cave, connects to the lake.
The Tagbanwa people look after it. Coron Island and the fishing grounds around it are their ancestral domain, recognised in 1998, and they call the island Calis. The lake takes its name from kayangag, their word for the red-vented cockatoo, and it is one of thirteen lakes they hold sacred. The elders opened it to outsiders in 2001, after a ritual called uliwansag asked the nature spirits for permission. There is an entrance fee, life vests are compulsory, and swimming is allowed only in parts of the lake.
