About Culion

For most of the twentieth century Culion was where the state sent people with leprosy, a colony opened in 1906 under American rule. The disease was gone from the island by the 1980s, but the World Health Organization did not declare Culion leprosy free until 2006, a full century after it began. The town covers Culion Island and 41 smaller ones.
