Sumisip lost its offshore barangays in 2008, the twelve that voted to become the municipality of Tabuan-Lasa. It kept 29 barangays and about 55,800 people on Basilan Island. The Yakan, who are the first people of Basilan, call the town Bulak Sumisip.
