Mapun is an island out in the Sulu Sea, closer to Sabah and to Palawan than to most of Tawi-Tawi, and the people who live there are the Jama Mapun, the people of Mapun. It was Cagayan de Sulu until 1984 and Cagayan de Tawi-Tawi until 1988. About 29,200 people live across fifteen barangays.
