Siargao
An island of reefs, small points and white sand beaches in the Philippine Sea, known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. It covers about 437 square kilometres and holds eight municipalities, among them Dapa, Del Carmen and General Luna. The east coast runs almost straight, with one deep inlet at Port Pilar.
The Pacific-facing reefs sit on the edge of the Philippine Trench, so the swell arrives with full power, and the surf is best from August to December during the habagat monsoon, when the wind blows offshore. Del Carmen holds one of the largest mangrove forest reserves in Mindanao, 4,871 hectares, with saltwater crocodiles in it. Boats out of General Luna run island-hopping trips to Guyam, Naked and Daku. Direct Manila flights to Sayak Airport started in March 2017. Typhoon Rai crossed the island in December 2021 and wrecked many buildings. Readers of Conde Nast Traveler voted Siargao the best island in Asia that same year.
