A town of colonial roads and well-preserved ancestral houses that the National Commission for Culture and the Arts counts as a heritage town. It lies east of Sarangani Bay and north of the Celebes Sea, and it is the most populous municipality in Sarangani.

The name came from a mistake. In 1912 a member of an American survey party asked a Maguindanaon man in Cebuano what the place was called. The man was sharpening his bolo and answered "galang", the Maguindanaon word for sharpening, and the surveyors wrote it down. Settlers from Cebu landed on the shore on 8 October 1914. No local law protects the old buildings yet, and the Heritage Conservation Society has asked for an ordinance like the one in Vigan, which would let the town join the Philippine list of candidates for UNESCO.
