About Eastern Samar

Magellan made his first Philippine landfall on Homonhon, an island off Guiuan, in March 1521, which makes Eastern Samar the first part of the country the Spanish ever saw. The same town took the first hit from Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, before Tacloban. Borongan is the capital, and the province faces the open Pacific, which is what brings the surfers to Calicoan.
