Matag-ob was assembled in 1957 out of five barrios taken from Palompon: Santo Rosario, Santa Rosa, Balagtas, San Vicente and Mabini. It has grown into a Leyte municipality of 18,618 people and 21 barangays. Palompon, for its part, still runs fifty villages without them.
