MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park
The war memorial at Palo that marks where General Douglas MacArthur came ashore in Leyte Gulf on 20 October 1944, at the start of the campaign to take the Philippines back from Japan.
The landing led to the largest naval battle of the Second World War, measured by the tonnage of ships sunk, and to Japan's defeat and surrender almost three years into the occupation. The site is a protected area, declared a national park on 12 July 1977 by President Ferdinand Marcos.
