Calbayog is big in a way the census does not show: sixth in the country for combined land and water area, stretched about 97 km along the Samar coast and cut into 157 barangays, more than some provinces manage. The hills behind the coast road hold the waterfalls the city puts on its posters. About 187,800 people live in all that space.
