About Alabat

Alabat has been renamed more often than most towns get founded: Gordo first, for the fat shape of the island, then Gordon, then Barcelona, and finally Alabat. A priest from Gumaca set it up in 1882 with an ermita for Our Lady of Monte Carmelo. A few speakers of Inagta Alabat are still here, a language UNESCO counts among the most endangered in the world.
