About Southern Leyte

Limasawa, off the southern tip, is credited with the first Mass on Philippine soil in 1521, a claim Butuan has been disputing for decades. The rest of Southern Leyte lives around Sogod Bay, where divers come for the walls and, in the early months of the year, for the whale sharks off Pintuyan. Maasin is the capital, and the province was the third district of Leyte until 1959.
